Artist Statement
A love of language and its structure informs my creative process, no matter the genre and medium, as I explore how words and images can inform and subvert one another.
The word "home," for example, influences my work. I grew up near Lake Huron, and my most popular paintings are my watercolor paintings of Great Lakes freighters, including the ship on which my grandfather was a helmsman.
"Naturalism" is another important word that can be informed or subverted by visualizations: I sometimes paint striking vistas and pastoral images of flora and fauna, but at other times those same subjects are juxtaposed with more negative aspects of civilization.
"Narrative," too, is an important aspect of my work, whether I am experimenting with poetry, creative nonfiction, Naïve art, writing D&D adventures, or using narrative as the basis for course curriculum.
